Women Away: West of Scotland

Oban Lorne Ladies travelled away this weekend to West of Scotland. They started with a strong squad of 22 women however injury plagued the game, leaving many people playing out of position with a lot of strength and experience ruled out on the sideline. The first half kicked off frantically with Oban scrambling to keep up with the pace and settle into the game. Both teams scrambled to maintain possession however West’s experience shone through as the capitalised-on Oban’s mistakes and opened the scoring. Oban showed strong set piece turning over scrums and Veronica Speirs stealing lineouts however the first half ended with Oban trailing 33-0.

After some stern words and a rousing half time chat from coach Corrie Louw Oban took back to the pitch with the drive to succeed. The game started positively with Oban’s kick and turnover of the ball. Some very quick decision making and strong forward running from Jordan MacIntyre saw her drive the ball well into West’s half with a fantastic play from Oban’s backs seeing Poppy McKillop power over the try line for Oban’s first points of the match. However, this burst of brilliance wasn’t maintained and West began hitting back with powerful running and fast ball handling. The game finished 60-5 to the home side and Oban ladies are left with a lot of work to do this week at training to help regain composure ahead of next weekends home game against Biggar.  Oban’s forward of the match this week was Jordan MacIntyre and their back of the match was Hannah Thompson. West awarded their payer of the match to Amy Gibson.
