Stockton FC - Sunday First Team - Massey Ferguson
On the hottest day possible to play football, Stockton Reserves lined up with a 4-5-1 formation in their 1st game of the season. With Josh “Nozza” Norris in goal, a back line of Jordan, Olly Hodson, Dave Ward and Gaz, our defence looked strong.
In midfield was Josh at Right Wing, Johnny as captain as well as holding midfielder, with Dan and Alex Boulden. Our left winger was Callum “twinkle toes” Bird. Lewis Califano up top on his own but up for the challenge.
The bench was strong too, Oscar, Sam Church (quite apt as our game was on a Sunday) Chay and Lewis Romero.
Within 5 minutes of the game we started well. Passing and movement from Josh and Alex resulting in us gaining 2 early corners. Massey felt the pressure.
But with that, the game’s first chance came to Massey from the penalty spot. “No way” cried out Johnny, “You’re having a laugh” I’m sure was said by Jordan. Still, penalty given. Can “Nozza” save this penalty…YES HE CAN! 0-0.
The usual characters perked up from this and became more vocal, Gaz, Jordan, Alex and Lewis Califano trying to motivate the troops. But, on 25 minutes Massey score, some mixed communication between goalkeeper and Dave Ward results in their striker making it 1-0 Massey.
This didn’t last long though as Stockton equalise through “Captain Fantastic” Johnny, assisted from Jordan’s set piece delivery. Momentum with Stockton, 2nd goal close to half time. Alex Boulden, assisted by Callum. With his left peg (not a typo) Alex strikes through a crowd. 2-1. Get in!!!!
As soon as we feel the game has swung our way, Massey equalise. 2-2. Gutting. But their winger allowed too much time and space. Stockton could’ve gone in 3-2 down but “Nozza” to the rescue. 2-2 at half time.
2nd half. On 47 minutes Massey do score and score what turns out to be the winner. “The ball was out” cries Lewis Romero to the ref, the ref was having none of it. Goal stands. 3-2. Dan Whitbread turns away in disgust but wants to put his stamp on the game.
Sadly we couldn’t quite create a chance or opening of any real note even with the introduction of some youthful substitutes. Lots of endeavour, lots of wanting to play football, but the heat was winning and so were Massey. Full time 3-2. We look forward to playing them again…BLOOD & THUNDER!
Man of the Match…Olly Hodson
