Oban vs Bishopton

The boys played at home this week against Bishopton, with a number of key players missing due to injuries. Despite this, they put on a fantastic performance, winning 64-36. The victory was not just impressive in terms of the scoreline, but also highlighted the team’s progress in training, showcasing excellent tackling, discipline, and team spirit.

The match was played over three 20-minute halves. In the first half, Alex who took on the captaincy demonstrated a strong work rate, particularly in tackles. In the first minutes following a line-out, Fergus made a strong run and scored in the 3rd minute, with Ross successfully converting the try. Just five minutes later, another try followed, driven by strong runs from Christy and Fergus, and the first of what was an afternoon of solid scrum performances by Oban, with Ross converting again.

Bishopton scored next, and it's worth noting that although Oban had a strong lead, the opposition never gave up and displayed great passing and running skills. After a restart by Oban, Sam ran the length of the pitch to score his first try of the game. Bishopton continued to push hard and managed to score another try, converting it in the dying minutes of the first half. As the half progressed the Oban forwards began to take control with strong runs from John and Alex, allowing Sam to score again. The final try of the half came from a defensive line-out, with Brendan finishing a strong run through the centre.

The second 20-minute section continued in much the same vein. Strong running by the forwards and excellent defensive tackling by the whole team, including superb tackles by Ruairidh and Christy, kept the momentum going. Sam scored the first two tries of this half, supported by line breaks from Alex, John, and Fergus. Although the opposition scored a try through their backs, Oban quickly countered with a spectacular run by Fergus, who covered the length of the pitch. The second 20-minute section concluded with another try from Bishopton and Ruairidh scoring for Oban, assisted by Fergus.

At the start of the third half, fullback Fergus took a big hit to the ribs and had to come off, with Aidan stepping into full back position. Oban kept fighting and scored three more tries in this final half—one by Sam, one by Christy following a powerful run, and the final one by Alex, nicely supported by Christy and John.

I hope I’ve captured everyone’s tries, as they were coming thick and fast at some points. It was a really positive performance by Oban, with the team jelling well and building on individual talents to show great teamwork.

Man of the Match: Fergus, for his defensive work, strong attacking runs, and leadership in defence. Good performances were also noted from Alexander, Cormack, and Callum in the backs, with some nice runs and good defensive work. Special mention to Ross for his kicking duties and restarts. Well done lads.
