GOGs U8 Turquoise  vs St Albans Wildcats

GOG U8 💜🦩💜 The 10th game of the season and we welcomed the St Albans Wildcats at home this Saturday. Before kick off it was nice to see both teams, parents, coaches and officials observe a minutes silence for Remembrance day very respectfully. We knew from our previous game with St Albans Wildcats that they were a strong opponent, being our first game in the U8's top tier.

The first quarter kicked off and the girls started off very sharp. As we anticipated the Wildcats were on the attack from the get go. Unfortunately for us we conceded the first goal of the game, although this appeared to be given controversially, as we were certain our keeper had two hands on the ball and was in control of the ball on the ground when this was kicked from her hands. Never the less the goal stood. The girls worked so hard defensively, but seemed rightfully a bit deflated. The girls did their best to put some attacks together, but these were broken down by some good defensive work from the Wildcats. Just before the break we conceded our second of the game.

Second quarter after a team talk and words of encouragement the girls started with the same determination as the first. Alara proved to be a thorn in the side of the Wildcats with some great interceptions, tackles and clearances breaking down their attacks. Evie B also worked extremely well with her team, showing real purpose in winning the ball back. Ariana and Olive also did their best to carry the ball forward in attack and also help out with defending. The quarter ended goaless with both teams very much in the game.

The third quarter and the girls were in persuate of a goal that alluded us in the first two quarters. Both teams were cancelling each other out in attack and defence. Evie B showed no signs of tiring,  preventing a lot of the Wildcats attacks. Ariana, Lala and Willow worked equally as hard in defence and attack. Just towards the end some quick fluent passing between Lala and Willow almost saw Willow open up our goal account, with a shot just shy of the post.

The fourth quarter of the game and the girls continued to show that fighting spirit we've all come to admire. Alara continued the fantastic work she did in defence and also made some really progressive attacking runs with the ball to try to get the GOGs back in the game. Olive, Lala and Ariana also continued to show we were not going to back down. Ariana really impressed as captain with some really well timed tackles in this quater and throughout the game. Lala and Ariana both saw shots blocked from some solid defending from the Wildcats. One shot in particular unintentionally hurting one of the Wildcats players, but nice to see equal concern and empathy shown from both sets of players.

Overall there was not a lot in the game and the girls can be proud of their resilience today. There was a definite improvement from the first game we played and the opposition praised the hard work shown by our girls after the game. The hard work continues and we're sure we'll see the girls reach their full potential.
