Girls U14's - Coventry Sphinx U13s
The girls finished off 2023 with a good performance against Coventry Sphinx but couldn’t get the 3 points it merited.
The girls started brightly, playing some lovely football we have come to see from them this season and created a golden chance after 10 minutes for Daisy who was thwarted by a fantastic point blank save from their goalkeeper.
Five minutes later, a mix up between goalkeeper and defender allowed Daisy a simple pass into the net to give the girls a deserved 1-0 lead.
Couple of minutes later a typical Ila shot from long range hit the crossbar and bounced down so fast, nobody was sure if it had crossed the line or not but it wasn’t given.
Sphinx had caused the girls no concerns at all, until a hopeful long clearance forward came down from the clouds and bounced up and over everyone into the net for the equaliser.
1-1 at half time.
We talked at half time that if they continued to do what they had been doing in the 1st half the win was theirs for the taking. Whilst having a lot of the ball, we couldn’t really find a way of creating many chances, but were still comfortable in restricting Sphinx to nothing, until a breakaway down the left resulted in a cross being turned in by their striker and an undeserving 2-1 lead.
The girls responded brilliantly and were rewarded with an equaliser, Daisy volleying in a corner and they continued to push for the winner but just couldn’t find another goal.

Girl of the Game - Ila 🏆
Parents Player - Poppy
It’s been a really good 2023 for the girls, the improvement as individuals and a team has been fantastic (and on the odd times they do listen, they learn and take it into their games).
Many opponents now comment how well the girls are passing and moving the ball round.
They end the year 5 points off the top (Sphinx are now top) with games in hand and the best defensive record in the league.
A great bunch of girls who are such close friends, they are a real credit to themselves and the club, we wish them all, and their family and friends, a Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2024.
