Women Away: Wigtownshire

Oban Lorne Ladies travelled away to Wigtownshire RFC this weekend for their second game of the season.  The game started frantically with both teams scrambling to keep possession and maintain forward movement. After a few minutes both teams settled in and found their form. Some powerful running from Kirsty Sinclair and Poppy McKillop put the Shire side under pressure before injury and tackling errors put the ball firmly in the hands of the opposition. Oban’s defence held strong for phase after phase as big tackles from Caitlin Fowler and Jordan MacIntyre steadied the Oban side. Eventually Wigtownshire found a gap and seized their opportunity claiming the first 5 points.

Oban got back in the game with some brilliant kicking from Ellie MacInnes positioning the team further into the opposition’s half. However more injuries crept into the Oban team as they were forced back allowing Wigtownshire in to touch down another 5 points. Wigtownshire’s confidence grew as the score line did and charged in a further 2 tries before half time leaving the score line sitting 22-0 to the home side.

Team talks at half time seemed to rally the troops Oban received the kick off with Grace MacLean catching in full and trucking it up. Some forceful running from Vice Captain Lindsay MacMillan and hard graft from the brilliant Jordan MacIntyre gave Ellie MacInnes the opportunity she needed to use her tactile kicking to position herself in space. With some fancy footwork Ellie ripped up the park scoring the first points for Oban leaving the score line as 22-7. Oban’s spirits were raised with some massive tackling from Tilly Cunningham and Arden Binnie holding Wigtownshire back long enough to turn over the ball. Ellie MacInnes found another gap in Shires defence running the length of the pitch supported by Arden Binnie only to be caught feet from the oppositions try line. Sadly, injury struck sending Ellie off before she could add more points to Oban’s tally.  Unfortunately, this seemed to set the trend for the remainder of the half. A few crucial players left the pitch injured within a matter of minutes leaving Oban scrambling to regain composure with a number of players forced to play positions out with their comfort zones. This was all that Wigtownshire needed to run in more points finishing the game 55-7 to the home team.

The Oban Ladies have a week off now before their next home game on the 15th of September against Hillhead Jordanhill 2XV team.
