14's Girls - Waysiders Drumpellier & Greenock
Oban Lorne U14 Girls welcomed both Waysiders Drumpellier (WD)and Greenock Wanders U14 Girls teams to Glencruitten this Sunday for round robin format and for their first fixture of 2025.
Oban took on Waysiders first, and the visiting team got off to a strong start in the first half scoring 5 tries to none within the first 7 minutes, Oban seemed to wake up at this point and started taking on the strong runners from the Waysiders team, demonstrating excellent tackles with Captain Rosie and Vice-Captain Karys leading from the front. Some lovely passing and support play lead to the ball being shipped to wide, a great offload from Abbie to Emmy who ran an excellent line along the touchline to score in the corner. With one minute left of the second half, the Oban defense forced a knock on from Waysiders, and they turned the ball over from the knock-on advantage. Quick hands along the line lead to a lovely break from Mary with great support running from Eowyn, the ball was again given to Emmy who broke through to score in the corner again. The Oban comeback was on!
Oban had the downhill advantage in the second half and they made the most of it. Scoring 6 unanswered tries. Another one for the speedy winger Emmy, two tries from excellent solo lines from Rosie, an awesome breakaway try from Kiyana, Karys scored from close range after several outstanding carries and a brilliant support line and finish from Freya. Notable mentions for great support lines and accurate passing for Lucy, Eowyn, Callie, Zandrea and Anna in the second half.
This drew the scores even with 3 minutes to play!
After the period of Oban dominance, Waysiders broke away and scored an excellent try.
Oban had it all left to play for and after some brilliant tackling and defensive work from Zandrea and Rosie, Oban gained possession and immediately turned to attack. With the last play of the match they shipped the ball wide and reached Karys who made her most important carry of the day, running strong to score in the corner to draw the scores level. Final score 9-9.
After a short break Oban took on an extremely well drilled Greenock Wanderers team. Despite their best efforts Oban really struggled to get into the game. There was some excellent work in defence from the girls.. The Greenock defence was too strong for the Oban girls, and their attacking and offloading game too strong for our defence. Despite the scoreline Oban kept their heads up til the end. Notable mentions to Zandrea, Anna, Rosie, Eowyn and Karys for their tireless work in defence. Final score 0-14.
