Boys U14 (2011) Major 1 - Newbridge United
A heavily depleted Naas travelled to Corrigan park to take on Newbridge United in an early morning kick off on Saturday. Too early for Naas in fact who didn't kick off until 10.07. Unfortunately the game was 3 minutes old at this stage and Naas were two nil down.
There's something unique about the Irish psyche when it comes to sport. We've seen it before in Rugby especially in how the Irish team starts to believe it's own hype and it somehow ends up in an undressing by a team usually dressed in all white or all black. Naas gave a footballing lesson the week previously to BBC United and if BBC had sent a scout to watch yesterday's game they would have learned a valuable lesson about physicality and outworking the opposition. That lesson was compliments of Newbridge United.
Once Naas woke up they stopped conceding goals but not chances. A penalty conceded in the second half was converted to make it 3-0. It could have been more when the Newbridge No.11 danced down the right side of the pitch passed despairing tackles from the winger and full back before swinging his left foot in what can only be presumed to be an effort to shoot. Bewilderingly he struck the Naas centre half straight on the shin despite the fact the ball had gone out for a corner approximately 4 seconds beforehand.
A bridge too far for a Naas team that crashed back down to earth with a whimper.
We go again.
